CHAPTER 6

I WAS ON PINS AND NEEDLES at the end of the service, my note for James burning a hole in my purse. I tried not to look like I was expecting Chuck to speak to me, but feared I’d failed with all my twitching. My mom left me in the lobby. I guess, thinking I’d be safe there, and so that’s where he found me, sneaking up from behind and sticking his head in my view.

“Hey. September, right?”

I startled, throwing one hand to my throat.

He shuffled his feet, left, right, left, right, acting nervous. I don’t know what he had to be nervous about. But then, I didn’t know him that well.

“Charles?” I asked, for want of other conversation.

That effervescent grin emerged. “That’s my actual name. Charles Edward DeWalt. I sound like a snob.”

“It’s not so bad,” I replied. “At least, your name isn’t September Blessing.”

Stuffing his hands in his pockets, he rocked back and forth on his heels. “I don’t know. I think it’s pretty great. Hey ...” He paused, glancing behind me. “I got a note for you, but first, I wanted to say ...” He swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “If he wasn’t my best friend, I would actually ask you out.”

This surprised me. I hadn’t been expecting it and could feel heat washing over my cheeks.

“Not to make things uncomfortable. But I thought I’d say so.”

I bobbed my head.

“I ... I have a note, too,” I said. I stuck my hand in my purse and fished it out, but cupped it in my palm. “Maybe we can shake hands?”

He nodded, and seconds later, extended his fingers. I placed mine in them, and we exchanged notes. But once again, he surprised me. Instead of releasing my fingers, he lifted them to his lips and kissed them.

The warmth of his breath swept over my hand, and along my arm. Overcome, I stood there, my mouth open, snapping it shut at the appearance of my mother. I wadded the paper in my hand up and stuck it in my pocket.

My mom had on her what-did-I-just-see face. I expected Charles ... Chuck ... why was I calling him Charles in my head? I expected him to make an excuse, play it off, but he did just the opposite.

He switched his winning smile to my mother’s face and, plain as you please, stated his intentions. “Mrs. Blessing, I’m attracted to your daughter. I’d like permission to see her.”

I sucked in a breath, totally shocked, and my mother noted my reaction. Her eyes roamed over my face for a moment. She pursed her lips. “How about you come over tomorrow for supper? Would that work?”

I couldn’t believe it. She’d totally gone for that.

Sure, we’d be supervised. But I found myself asking what the difference was between Chuck’s approach and James’? They were the same age, both over eighteen, an obvious point my father had made. James had a job and went to church. That ought to be a plus, but wasn’t. I wasn’t aware Chuck had a job, and he’d only started coming to church.
